CGI: Cognitively Guided Instruction
CGI stands for Cognitively Guided Instruction, and it is a way to teach math by focusing on the thought process behind solving problems, instead of the end result.
Problem SolvingA story problem is a story that has numbers in it. In a story problem we are trying to figure out the missing number.

Number TalksNumber talks are brief discussions (5–15 minutes) that focus on student solutions for a single, carefully chosen mental math computation problem. Students share their different mental math processes aloud while the teacher records their thinking visually on a chart or board.
|
Counting CollectionsCounting Collections is a structured opportunity for children to count a collection of objects. They might count the items one-by-one or skip-count by groups. This experience with counting lays the foundation for understanding of the base-ten system and operating on numbers.
|
Choral CountingChoral Counting is an activity in which the teacher leads children in counting aloud together by a given number. Different numbers lend themselves well to surfacing different mathematical ideas.
