Universal design for learning is to ensure that all students have access to the curriculum and can learn. U.D.L. consists of three principles: Representation, Expression and Engagement.
Representation is how students are delivered the material. Representation takes into consideration the type of learner a child is. Some children are auditory learners while others may be visual or tactile learners. Representation should address all of these types of learners when a lesson is presented to them. Students should simply be given choices on how they recieve the information given to them.
So use MANY CHOICES for delivery! |
Expression is how students are able to express what they have learned. Just like Representation, not all learners can display what they know in the same ways. Some children can express their knowledge through performance art. Others may express themselves through their writing such as poems or short stories. Whatever their means of expressing themselves, students should have access to these design for learning.
So allow them to be SHOW what they KNOW! |
Engagement is what makes the lesson interesting and attention getting for the students. No one wants to do worksheets all day! Therefore, all lessons presented should be engaging and maintain the attention of the student throughout the entire activity. The lesson should also be related to what the student is familiar with. A student will not be engaged if they are unaware of the topic.
So make it INTERESTING! |
